The Welch Foundation Announces 2019 Welch Award Recipients Drs. Armand Paul Alivisatos and Charles M. Lieber

Houston, TX – September 10, 2019 – The Welch Foundation, one of the nation’s largest sources of private funding for basic chemical research, has announced that Drs. Armand Paul Alivisatos and Charles M. Lieber are the 2019 recipients of the prestigious Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry. Highly-respected and influential leaders in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, Drs. Alivisatos and Lieber are being recognized for their important research contributions which have had a significant, positive impact on humankind. They will be honored at the Welch Award Banquet on October 21. Drs. Alivisatos and Lieber will share the $500,000 Welch Award.

Drs. Alivisatos and Lieber are pioneers in the field of nanoscience. Alivisatos’ work with the fabrication of nanocrystals and their use in renewable energy and biomedical applications is internationally recognized. Lieber has provided seminal concepts central to the bottom-up paradigm of nanoscience and has been a leader in the application of nanomaterials.

As the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University of California Berkeley and Samsung Distinguished Professor of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Dr. Alivisatos is credited with making groundbreaking contributions to the fundamental physical chemistry of nanocrystals. He helped lay a foundation for understanding their distinctive properties and created a framework for making them at scale. His work has led to the widespread use of nanocrystals in medical diagnostics, and in a new generation of television displays. Today he is devoted to developing new renewable energy applications of nanocrystals. Dr. Alivisatos played a critical role in the establishment of the Molecular Foundry, a U.S. Department of Energy's Nanoscale Science Research Center; and was the facility's founding director. He is the founding editor of Nano Letters, a leading scientific publication of the American Chemical Society in nanoscience.

Dr. Alivisatos received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley. He began his career with UC Berkeley in 1988 and with Berkeley Lab in 1991. His scientific advances have yielded more than 50 patents and his 341 refereed publications and papers have been cited more than 104,000 times. In 2003, Science Magazine named Dr. Alivisatos’ quantum dot technology one of the Top 10 “Breakthroughs of the Year” and the Forbes/Wolfe Nanotech Report named them the top nanotech breakthrough of 2003. Dr. Alivisatos has been recognized for his accomplishments with numerous awards, including the Dan David Prize, the National Medal of Science and the Wolf Prize.

Dr. Charles M. Lieber holds a joint appointment at Harvard University in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is the Joshua and Beth Friedman University Professor, and also serves as the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Lieber has made pioneering contributions to nanoscience and emerging nanotechnologies. He originated rational methods for synthesizing wide-range, chemically-distinct nanoscale wires with diameters 1000s of times smaller than a human hair and has pioneered the application of these materials for nanoelectronics and computing. Lieber has also made ground-breaking advances at the boundary between nanoelectronics and medicine, including the development of powerful bio-nanoelectronic sensors capable of detecting diseases down to the level of a single infectious virus particle. More recently, Lieber has made significant breakthroughs by developing three-dimensional nanoelectronic arrays that can be seamlessly integrated into the brain, thereby providing an unprecedented view of the inner-workings of our ‘living computer’ as well as providing the blueprint for powerful new technology to monitor and treat neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Lieber performed his undergraduate work at Franklin and Marshall College where he received a B.A. in Chemistry, followed by a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford and Postdoctoral Research at the California Institute of Technology. Before joining the faculty at Harvard in 1991, he served as a Chemistry Professor at Columbia University. Dr. Lieber has published more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, is the principal inventor on more than 50 patents, and has multiple honorary degrees, fellowships, memberships and professorships. His work has been recognized by a number of awards, including the John Gamble Kirkwood Award, NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, MRS Von Hippel Award and the Wolf Prize.
